There are bad ideas in politics, and then there are ideas so drenched in cruelty that they defy even the most cynical explanations. Donald Trump’s latest proposal to strip Medicare and Medicaid funding from hospitals that provide gender-affirming care for minors is a calculated act of political theater that weaponizes children’s health for ideological gain. This is cruelty on steroids.
Let me be very clear. Gender-affirming care for minors is already tightly regulated, overseen by medical professionals, and must not be handed over to political hacks and bloviating fools who need to change the narrative from a faltering economy. The care is tailored to each minor’s needs. It is not some reckless free-for-all, as Trump tried to claim in his bizarre primetime address on Wednesday night. To threaten hospitals with the loss of federal funding simply for offering these services is to hold the entire healthcare system hostage to a culture war.
The warped fixation that Trump has about the trans community is breathtaking. The trans community makes up 1% of the public, underscoring his desire to be cruel. The overt act of bigotry is staggering, even when measured by Trump’s standards. To think that medical decisions should be made based on religious beliefs or political affiliations is so disheartening to read about in the 21st century.
Forget, we are told, that there are peer-reviewed studies that show a marked improvement in the mental health of transgender and gender diverse youth who receive gender-affirming care. Forget that studies show how this care is medically necessary and can be lifesaving. Forget that the American Academy of Pediatrics supports access to gender-affirming care for minors. What we are told to forget is mind-numbing.
But absurdity is only half the story. The cruelty is the point. This proposal would force hospitals into an impossible choice: deny care to vulnerable youth or risk losing the lifeline of federal funding that keeps their doors open. It is a policy designed not to solve a problem, but to create suffering. It tells transgender minors that their existence is negotiable, that their health is expendable, and that their dignity is a political bargaining chip.
That is unacceptable.
Stripping funding from hospitals doesn’t just target transgender youth but destabilizes entire communities. Medicaid and Medicare are the backbone of healthcare for millions of Americans, especially the poor, the elderly, and the disabled. To jeopardize that system in pursuit of a narrow ideological crusade on the backs of trans youth is the epitome of reckless governance at its most dangerous.
I reject the push by the Trump Administration to attempt to erase trans children from public life by making their needed medical care inaccessible. Our nation has long prided itself on being a nation where freedom and dignity are not conditional. Yet here we are, watching Trump propose rules that would strip both away from some of the most vulnerable among us. History will not look kindly on this moment.
Trump’s proposal is not just absurd. It is a complete moral failure. And it should be rejected with the full force of outrage it deserves.
